Samuel Prentice (Prentiss; 1736–1807) of Stonington, Conn., was commissioned major of Col. Samuel Holden Parsons’s 6th Connecticut Regiment, and after 1 Jan. 1776 he continued to serve as major of Parsons’s 10th Continental Regiment. On the recommendation of the Board of War, Congress promoted Prentice to lieutenant colonel of the 10th Regiment on 10 Aug. (JCC, 5:644; see also General Orders, 12 Aug.). Prentice became lieutenant colonel of the 1st Connecticut Regiment on 1 Jan. 1776 and served to May 1778 when he left the army because a lieutenant colonel with less seniority in the Connecticut line was promoted over him (see Prentice to GW, 15 May 1778, DNA: RG 93). James Chapman (1734–1776), who had served as a captain in the 6th Connecticut Regiment from May to December 1775 and in the 10th Continental Regiment since 1 Jan. 1776, was promoted to major of the 10th Regiment by Congress on 19 Aug. (JCC, 5:667; see also General Orders, 15 Aug.). He was killed on 15 Sept. 1776 during the retreat from New York.
