John Wayne Matheney, Sr., age 71, of 211 Haven Wood Road, Millboro, Virginia died Friday, March 6, 2020 at his home.

He was born March 21, 1948 in Nimrod Hall, Virginia to the late Daniel Jackson Matheney and Ida Mae Riley Matheney. He was a former foreman for Virginia Power Plant and then started his own business called Matheney Plumbing and worked for over 30 years plumbing. He was a member and deacon of Woodland Union Church and was a member of the Masons. John was an avid outdoorsman whose favorite hobbies were hunting and fishing. He was a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Dawn Marie Spittler; three brothers, Daniel “Buddy” Matheney, Howard “Wiggles” Matheney, Harmon Matheney; three sisters, Emma Ross, Nettie Williams and Mable Smith.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Elizabeth Huntington Matheney of Millboro; a son, John Wayne Matheney, Jr. and wife Bahereh of Apex, NC; two daughters, Lisa Clark Compton and husband Jack of Hot Springs, Susan Clark Kelley and husband Ron of Lee, MA; son in law, Danny Spittler of Staunton; two sisters, Ruby Jane Williams of Staunton, Norma Swearengin and husband Carl of Millboro; a brother, Ernest Matheney of Millboro; six grandchildren, Zachary Kelley, Alexander Compton, Rebekah Kelley, Samuel Kelley, Merrick Spittler, Owen Matheney; special friends, Wayne Williams, Jimbo Tentant, Timmy and Fern Plecker; and a number of nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, March 9, 2020 at 11:00AM at Woodland Union Church in Millboro, Virginia with Pastor David George and Pastor Mark Hambrick officiating. Interment will follow in Woodland Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10:00AM until time of service at Woodland Union Church.

The family suggest memorial tributes take the form of contributions to Mountain Regional Hospice, Volunteers, P.O Box 637, Clifton Forge, Virginia 24422 and to the Woodland Church Cemetery Fund, 347 McClung Drive, Millboro, Virginia 24460.
