George Henry Deverman, 95, of Greenview, Illinois, passed peacefully at Heritage Health in Springfield, Illinois, on February 29, the same date his mother passed forty-eight years ago, at 5 am, the same time his wife passed fifteen years ago.
He was born on February 13, 1925, the son of Otto and Esther (Derry) Deverman at his home in Greenview.
He married his high school sweetheart, Doris Mae Benjamin, on June 30, 1945, in New London, Connecticut, where he was stationed and served our grateful nation during WWII on the Blackfish U.S. Naval Submarine. George was a lifelong resident of the Deverman farmstead established northwest of Greenview in 1878 by his grandfather, Henry Deverman. Upon returning from the war, he began farming with his parents on the family farm. He contributed to the Menard County Illinois community throughout his life. A Master Farmer and dedicated leader, George received distinguished awards for his sixty years of continuous membership in the American Legion Post 116, Department of Illinois, service as former President of the Association of Illinois Soil and Water Conservation Districts, Menard County Soil and Water Conservation District, Illinois Commission on Forestry Development, Past Master of the Greenview Masonic Lodge, member of the New Salem Masonic Lodge, member of Scottish Rite and Clerk of Session at Greenview United Presbyterian Church. He was also an active member of the Historic Marbold Farmstead Association, Menard County Farm Bureau, Greenview Cemetery Board, AMVETS Post 179 and Ansar Shrine Temple of Springfield.
George is survived by two sons, Gary (wife, Arlene) Deverman and Ron (wife, Mary) Deverman; a daughter, Denene (husband, Ray) Crabbs; his grandchildren, Michele (husband, Joe) Hawkins, Cara (husband Mike) Filipiak, Michael Deverman, Scott (wife, Emily) Crabbs, Brian (wife, Chrissy) Crabbs and David (wife, Kendra) Crabbs and his great- grandchildren, Grace, Joe, Madelyn, Minnie, Iris, Rachel, Ethan, Deacon and Bennett.
George was preceded in death by his parents; his wife and his sister, Dorothy Conkling.
A visitation will be held on Friday, March 6, 2020, from 4 pm to 7 pm at Hurley Funeral Home, 122 W. Douglas Ave. Petersburg, Illinois. A Masonic service will immediately follow the visitation at 7 pm. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, March 7, 2020, at the United Presbyterian Church, 111 S. Blaine St. Greenview, Illinois, at 10 am with Shane Hoerbert officiating. Burial will immediately follow the service at Elmwood Cemetery in Greenview with the Menard County Inter Veterans Ceremony Unit performing military burial rites.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in the memory of George Deverman may be made to the United Presbyterian Church at the address above and/or Historic Marbold Farmstead Association, P.O. Box 438, Greenview, Illinois 62642.
