Zella N. Erwin Rust, 79, one of nine children of Jesse and Opal McKineny Erwin, was born Jan. 16, 1921, at Solo. She died Jan. 11, 2001, at Texas County Memorial Hospital in Houston. After attending school near Solo, she graduated from Houston High School and attended Southwest Missouri State at Springfield. She taught at Greenhill School near Simmons for one year. She became a member of New Hope Baptist Church at an early age and later the First Christian Church of Cabool. She married Ray Rust Dec. 21, 1941, at the home of the Rev. Cardy at Simmons after a lengthy courtship. The Rusts were married for 59 years and had four children. Mrs. Rust worked at Bauer Brothers and Brown Shoe Company for 27 years. After her retirement, she gardened, fished, and camped with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was known by her great-grandchildren as "Grandma Cheesecurl" and "Grandma Camper."
She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, her twin, Zula Johnson, and Olive Erwin; two brothers, Wayne and Howard; an infant daughter, Gail Rae; a granddaughter and great-grandson. Surviving are her husband, Ray; her son, Derald Rust of Shenandoah, Iowa; two daughters, Karen Rust and Renee Pearson of Cabool; three sisters, Mildred Rust of Cabool, Waunita Akeman of Houston, and Kathleen Vance of Red Oak, Okla.; one brother, Ralph Erwin of Houston; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Services were Jan. 15 at the First Christian Church of Cabool with Tim Randall officiating. Burial was in the Oak Dale Cemetery near Simmons under the direction of Elliott-Gentry Funeral Home of Cabool.
