With deep and sad regret we chornicle this death of Carrie, youngest child of John Hoffman and wife on Saturday morning of heart trouble, super-induced by dropsy. Carrie Laverna Hoffman died in the house in which she was born July 9, 1902, and died October 30, 1920, aged 18 years, 3 months, and 21 days.
Although in failing health for about a year prior to her recent illness, from minor injuries which resulted in an absecessed hip and other complications, her late illness was only of six weeks duration. While in the act of doing some heavy work in the fields, carrying a bag of corn to the house she complained of great pains in her leftside and took her bed from that day until the end came, which was peaceful. All that loving and willing hands could do and all medical aid and skill did to prolong her life haveing the services of the best physicans of the county, proved to no avail.
Although possessed of a great, rugged physical condition for one of her age, it has been intimated by members of her family that she did not possess the vitality and streagth, which appeared to be hers. The deceased was endowed with a charming personality and invariably greeted her friends with a pleasant smile and cheery words. The hospitality of her home was proverbial and her passing hence in the bloom of young womanhood, has plunged the entire community in deep sorrow. In the home and in the church her influence was a powerful for the good. God surely plucked one of his fairest flowers when He summoned her home to the eternal rest, while in the days of her youth. She was a member of the Pine Grove Church of God, a pupil in the Sunday School since childhood, and at the time of her death was a teacher in the Primary Department of the Sunday School. She was an active as well as charger memner of the Pine Grove Grange and at her death was holding the office of Pomona.
As the time of her dissolution drew nigh she calmly looked into the future with confidence and chirstian fortitude. She made plans for her funeral even to the minutes details which were faithfully carried out by her sorrowing parents.
The deceased is survived by her parents and the following sisters and brother; Mrs. Sydney Weaver of Plankington South Dakota,; Mrs. Catharine Murphy and Mrs. Olive Sites, of Harrisburg; Mrs. Emma Murphy, Baileys, and Herman Hoffman, of Akron Ohio; Two sisters and two brothers have preceded her into the spirit world.
The funeral was held Tuesday with short services at the late home andlater at the Bethel Church, Rev. J.A. Staub officiating.
The pallbearers were; O.R. Burd, Russell Freeland, Howard Houck, Ralph Burd, David Singer, and Lester Holmes, all members of the Grange. The interment was made in the family burial plot in the New Bloomfield Cemetery.
