Leon Robert Armentrout, 84, of the Village on the Green in Longwood, Florida, passed away on February 20, 2020. He was the son of Floyd and Ocie Armentrout, one of six brothers.

He was born in Glady, West Virginia on August 5, 1935. He graduated from Alleghany High School in Cumberland, Maryland in 1953, graduated from Tri-State College with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering in 1961, and graduated from Rollins College with a Master of Science in Management in 1981. He was a veteran of the US Navy, serving during the Korean War.

He was married to Joyce Emily Armentrout (nee Gump) on September 22, 1962. Leon retired from Northrup Grumman Laser Systems in 2000.

Leon was active with the United Way years go. He was used to sing in a barbershop quartet and chorus. Leon also served on the board of the Sweetwater Country Club Homeowners’ Association. He was also very active with numerous activities at the Village on the Green.

His passion was genealogy, tracing his family history back MANY generations. He also wrote articles for the West Virginia Division of Culture and History, and was recognized by the State of West Virginia in 2016 as a West Virginia History Hero.

He is survived by is wife and his son, Jeffrey, 5 grandchildren, his brothers Sterl Armentrout and Dorrin Armentrout, and numerous nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at the Village on the Green at Clubhouse, 500 Village PL, Longwood, FL, 32779 on Tuesday, February 25, 2020 at 2PM. An interment ceremony is being planned for at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
