The reported son of Emanuel & Keziah Catherine (Lehr) Herman, per his pension file he was raised near Wrightsville, York County, Pennsylvania. However, the family appears in the 1850 census in Dauphin County and in 1860 in Manchester Township, York County, raising questions as to whether this references the same man. He stood 5' 9" tall and had dark hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he was drafted in York County October 24, 1862, mustered into federal service at York November as a private with Co. A, 166th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), and promoted to 1st lieutenant to date December 8, 1862. He became seriously ill with a lung disease while stationed at Suffolk, Virginia, but honorably discharged with his company July 28, 1863. His obituary in the York Gazette (shown here) erroneously claims that "when the Civil War broke out he enlisted" when in fact he was drafted sixteen months into the war. The "when the war broke out he enlisted" claim is one commonly found in obituaries of Civil War veterans and is usually erroneous as it is in this case.

He married Mary C. Wantz November 23, 1864, in York and fathered Nettie Florence (b. 10/21/65 - married Charles L. Peterman), Mary Jane (b. 01/25/68), Gertrude V. (b. 01/23/73), and John O. (b. 07/11/74 - death certificate lists his mother as Julia Wantz). Mary died in September 1877, and he married Mary Ann Spahr July 2, 1878, in Carlisle, Cumberland County, fathering Grace I. (b. 04/10/82), Lillie A. (b. 12/17/86), and Helen Louisa (b. 05/18/90). He died at his home at age 63-11-5 reportedly from throat cancer and had been a member of York's Sedgwick Post No. 37, G.A.R. Per his stated age at death, his birth date calculates to April 4, 1841, but the date from his obituary is used here.
