Steve was born in Providence, Rhode Island on June 22, 1941 and grew up with two brothers, Gerald Dennis Durand and Walter "Red" Durand. He graduated from North Providence High School and joined the Navy to become a Cryptologic Technician where he attended the Navy School in Coronado California. After getting out of of the Navy, Steve decided to go to college at California State University at Long Beach. There he roomed with five other guys who would become friends for life. Steve worked as a bartender part time while in college and while working he met his future wife, Janie. She was a brand new flight attendant just under age so she had borrowed a friend's ID which Steve checked and was smart enough to get the name and phone number. When he called her apartment, a roommate did not recognize the name right away and almost hung up. Steve and Jane were married on February 3, 1968 in Redondo Beach at Saint James Catholic Church. Steve became a Los Angelos Police officer shortly after marriage and stayed with the force for ten years. During that time, Steve and Jane partnered with friends and did the original Flip or Flop in the LA beach area buying small rentals, fixing them up then selling and moving on to bigger units. They expanded their investments to become partners in the West End Tennis Club and later the South End Tennis Club both in Torrance. Steve left the LAPD to manage the West End from 1980 to retirement in 1997. They moved to the desert in Rancho Mirage where he spent the rest of his life. Steve and Jane were members of Mission Hills Country Club.
Steve led a full and adventurous life. He hitchhiked across the U.S. several times in the early 60's, spent several years in Japan while in the Navy and he and Jane did much traveling through out their married life. Where ever Steve went he quickly made friendships that lasted his lifetime. Every one was his "Bro", he loved us and we loved him back. He also loved to tell stories from his life, about home in Rhode Island, in the Navy and especially his time in the LAPD. He was an exceptional storyteller, so much so no one would mind that they heard the same story many times. He loved golfing, good times with his family and friends, entertaining and smoking the occasional cigar.
Steve was cremated shortly after death. Jane will plan a remembrance ceremony after the first of the year where you can meet Jane, her brother Charles Cox and wife Cathy Marsh and their children Ryan Cox and Brianna Cox with her husband Stephen Brownlee. On Steve's side you may meet his brother Jerry and nieces, Sharyn Taylor (Scott and Destin) and Courtney Ballard (James and their children, Blake and Elle ), and his other brother Red, his wife Donna Durand, (nephew Jesse and his wife Sarah Durand and his grand nephews Jack and Rye Oliver) and all his other Bros. Steve wishes everyone a good and happy life.
