Ressie Burns first married a Travis Huntley on January 12th, 1900 by Justice of the Peace, J. F. Gaddy. Witnesses were W. W. Ingram, J. A. Gaddy and Many Gaddy. Travis was 20 years old and Ressie was 18 years old according to the Anson County Marriage Records. I have not been able to locate Travis in any future census records at this time.

According to family history, this information is confirmed to be the same Ressie Burns who three years later married Alfred Brewer.

Ressie married Alfred Brewer on February 17th, 1903 in Anson County, NC. Per the marriage record her parents names were Mark and Catherine Burns and they were both living at the time Ressie was married according to the marriage license which was added as a photo on this page. Following is a newspaper article which mentions her death as being caused by T. B. along with 3 other women in the community of Burnsville.

Colored People Dying Faster Than Whites.

The death of four colored women, the wives of Frank Williams, Jake Turner, David Tilman, and Alfred Brewer and Preston Thomas, all living near together in the upper part of the county and all dying within one month, has caused some consternation among the colored people. An unusually large number of deaths among the colored race have reported all over the country and it is evident from observation that consumption and certain diarrheal diseases are playing havoc with this race. The mortuary report for June shows that of twenty-one towns in the state having a total population of 213,800, the colored race lost by death 160 out of a total of 8,400 while the white race lost only 153 from a total of 128,800.

During the month there was one death among the whites in Wadesboro and the colored lost three during the same time.
