Gerald W. Abrams, age 83, a resident of rural Vienna, passed away Tuesday evening, February 18, 2020, at 3:10 PM at the Ray and Kay Eckstein Hospice Care Center at Mercy Health in Paducah, Kentucky.

Gerald was born September 24, 1936 in Carlisle, Indiana. He was the eldest of three children born to Paul and Mary (Vest) Abrams.

On January 23, 1960, Gerald was united in marriage to Nancy Jo West at the United Methodist Church in Carlisle, Indiana. She survives.

Gerald is also survived by: his sons – P. (K.) Abrams of Hawthorne Woods, Illinois and T. (C.) Abrams of Henderson, Kentucky; 3 grandchildren; a great granddaughter; as well as nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.

In addition to his parents, Gerald was preceded in death by: a sister – Elizabeth Miller and a brother and sister-in-law – Harold Deice (Beverly) Abrams.

Gerald was a graduate of Carlisle, Indiana High School. He served honorably in the U.S. Army and was a paratrooper.

Gerald had been employed in the maintenance department of Electric Energy, Inc. (E.E.I.) at Joppa and had worked as a welder in the metal processing field. However, Gerald's passion was farming and he enjoyed raising Charolais cattle.

Gerald was a member of the Massac County Saddle Club and enjoyed horseback riding. He was also an avid boater, camper and a talented slalom water skier.

Gerald was a faithful and devoted Christian and an active member of the New Hope Baptist Church where he had taught the teenage class in the Sunday school department. He had also been an active member of the Gideon International.

A Graveside service honoring the life of Gerald W. Abrams will be conducted Friday morning, February 21, 2020, at 11 AM at New Hope Cemetery, 6804 New Columbia Road, Belknap, Illinois.

Military graveside honors will be accorded by the Beggs-Gurley VFW Post # 5222 of Vienna.

There will be no public visitation. Those attending the service are asked to gather at the cemetery at 10:45 AM Friday.
