Philetus was killed at Church and Schuyler streets in Albany on the Susqueahana railroad. He attempted to get on a passenger train which left the depot at 5:30 PM when his foot slipped and he fell under the train. The wheel passed over him crushing his left groin. He died at 10:15 PM.
