SAN MARCOS — Elizabeth Prosser Stirling, 88, died February 24, 2009, in San Marcos, Texas, following a brief illness.

Known to her friends as Betsy, the former Elizabeth Polk Prosser was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to William O.H. Prosser and Margaret Crawford Keeling. As an “Army brat” she grew up in such places as Panama, Honolulu, Hot Springs, Washington, DC, and Indianapolis. She graduated from Hannah More Academy and attended the University of Hawaii and Butler University.

She married Earl Hopkins Stirling of Sulphur Springs, Texas, in 1942 and came to Galveston in 1947, when Dr. Stirling joined the Radiology Staff at St. Mary’s Infirmary. He died in 1997. Brothers William O.H. Prosser, Jr., and Stewart K. Prosser also preceded her in death.

In Galveston she was an active volunteer with the St. Mary’s Infirmary Women’s Auxiliary and the librarian at Trinity Episcopal School. She was gracious, a woman of style, and an avid reader. She also enjoyed composing verse.

She is survived by sons James Hargrove Stirling of Wimberley, William Prosser Stirling of Washington, DC; grandsons Zachary Eli Stirling of Austin, William Caleb Stirling of Austin, Joshua Earl Stirling of Wimberley; nieces Angela Keeling Prosser, Lila Prosser Ashmore and nephews Stuart William Orval Prosser and Robert Yancy Prosser, all of Little Rock, Arkansas; and great-grandson Zeye Alan Markwell-Stirling.

She died peacefully with loved ones by her side. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 25th, 2009, at Trinity Episcopal Church in Galveston.
