NORFOLK--John Lealon Carter Sr., 83, of 5631 Tidewater Drive, a native of Ehrhardt, S.C., died Tuesday in a hospital.
Mr. Carter had retired from civil service as a crane operator at Hampton Roads Army Piers and from Ames and Webb as a foreman. He was a member and deacon of Fox Hall Baptist Church. He had been a member of Knights of Pythias 106 for 25 years.
Survivors include his wife, Lillian M. Carter; two daughters, Norma Reynolds of Fayetteville, N.C. and Nancy Monroe of Virginia Beach; two sons, Charles Carter of Savannah, Ga. and John L. Carter Jr. of Virginia Beach; a stepdaughter, Florence A. Edwards of Norfolk; two stepsons Alan Winfree Jr. of Atlanta and Norman D. Winfree of Norfolk; a sister, Ruth Carter of Spartanburg, S.C.; and three grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducte at 11 a.m. Thursday in Smith and Williams Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel, by the Rev. Elmer Vester. Burial will be in Rosewood Memorial Park.
The family will be at the funeral home from 7 to 8 p.m. today and at his son's home, 5321 Leicester Court, Virginia Beach. Memorial donations may be sent to the American Lung Association.
