Donald E. Baker was born May 2, 1925 in Cheyenne, Wyoming, and passed away July 29, 2007 at his home in Republic, Missouri.

Don was the son of William Loy Baker and Murel Eliene (Gilroy) Baker, and was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters.

Enlisting in the Army on December 29, 1941, Don served in all eight Armies during his service and went into D-Day plus five on Omaha Beach; serving with General Patton at the Battle of the Bulge. He served in World War II, Korea twice and Vietnam earning numerous medals including the Silver Star with Oak Leaf Clusters, the Purple Heart and many Campaign Ribbons. Don also served as an Army Recruiter and Advisor to the National Guard. His permanent rank upon retirement was First Sergeant on August 1, 1968. He was a life long member of the VFW, NRA, American Legion and Lutheran Church.

Don married Velma L. Gosser on March 3, 1946 at Hays, Kansas and from that union came seven wonderful children: Cheryl Crouch of Ozark, Missouri; Warren and wife Barb of Nixa, Missouri; Holly and husband Glenn Unrein, Hays, Kansas; Stuart and wife Janet of Highlandville, Missouri; Stacey and husband Keith Vonfelt of Derby, Kansas; Sybil and husband John Brauer of Republic, Missouri; and Jay of Woodland Park, Colorado. There are also 13 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be Thursday evening August 2, 5:00-7:00 P.M., and funeral services will be Friday, August 3, 2007, in Hays, Kansas at 2:00 P.M. at Hays Memorial Chapel with interment at Mt. Allen Cemetery, Hays.

In lieu of flowers, the family would truly appreciate contributions made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society Branch Chapter, 1675 E. Seminole, Springfield, MO 65804, (417) 882-8128.
