Longtime Anchorage resident Basil E. O'Neill, 94, died May 4, 2009 at the Anchorage Pioneer Home. At the family's request, there will not be a service.

Mr. O'Neill was born Nov. 13, 1914, in the Boston area and came to Alaska in 1936. He worked for a period of time at both the McCarthy and Independence mines and in the late '30s moved to Kodiak. While in Kodiak he met and married his wife, Janet Smith. He and his brother-in-law, Bill Smith, started a bus service in Kodiak that provided transportation between the town of Kodiak and the military base. After World War II, the family relocated to Anchorage. Mr. O'Neill went to work for the Alaska Railroad and retired from the railroad after 30 years of service. He then worked for the Ben Boeke Sports arena for several more years, performing maintenance. Mr. O'Neill loved sports, especially hockey, baseball and basketball. He played senior hockey for several years on Charles Schulz's Snoopy Senior World Hockey Team, which earned him several gold medals. He also coached youth hockey for many years in Anchorage. In the summer he could always be found playing baseball on the Park Strip or shooting hoops, and did so well into his 80s. He was a family man who loved his three children.

He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Janet O'Neill; and daughter, Dixie Boyd, both of Anchorage. He had six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, Basil O'Neill Jr.; and daughter, Kathleen Kintz. He was a kind, gentle man and will be greatly missed.
