Gerry D. Brown
(1939 - 2020)
Gerry was born May 26,1939 to Arthur and Ruth Brown and grew up in the small town of Pierce,Idaho. He earned his Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Idaho in 1961 and his Master’s Degree in Physical Education in 1964.
While in college at a Freshman orientation dance, (which Gerry, as a Junior, “crashed” in order to check out the incoming Freshman girls), it was that night he met the love of his life and best friend Marilyn Dreier. Marilyn recalls her first impression of Gerry was that he was a fabulous dancer. They married September 10,1960. At the time of his passing Gerry was planning a special anniversary trip to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary.
After graduation, Gerry’s first professional job was in Almira ,Washington where he taught and successfully coached football. He then moved on to Selkirk High School in Metaline Falls-Ione, Washington where he continued to teach and coach football from 1964-67. In his last 2 years as head coach the team was 15-1. His next position was in Ridgefield, Washington from 1967-74 at Ridgefield High School. He enthusiastically took on a few positions at the same time, Guidance Councilor, Athletic Director and once again head football coach. Eventually Gerry decided to slow down a bit, gave up coaching football and focused on working the 10 acre berry farm that he and Marilyn had purchased, naming it “Brown’s Black & Blue Berries”. In 1974-75 Gerry and his family of wife, Marilyn, daughter Kerrie, and son Garrett lived and worked in Colton, Washington.
Finally the family moved to Canby, Oregon in 1975 upon Gerry’s acceptance of an administrative position as a Vice Principal with the Canby School District. After over 25 years as the Vice Principal he retired from CHS and his 4 year position as Assistant Superintendent.
During his lifetime, Gerry had many hobbies. His greatest enjoyment was fishing. However, he had many other interests including but not limited to: trap shooting, raising champion field trial dogs, tending koi fish ponds, gardening, pottery, running “Hood to Coast” (2x’s) and golf. He even had a golf rarity, a hole-in-one on a par 4 hole. He was also keenly interested in following the triumphs and tragedies of the Portland Trail Blazers, Seattle Seahawks, and the Seattle Mariners.
If one had to describe Gerry’s life in one word, that word would be ”GIVER”. He willingly gave of his time, talents and treasures to help others. He was past President of Canby Rotary, as well as a Paul Harris Fellow. Upon his retirement he became an honorary member of Rotary in recognition of his many contributions to the club including the establishment of the Rotary 3-on-3 annual basketball tournament. He was proud to be on the Canby Center Board of Directors, a non-profit corporation dedicated to assisting the needy. He was also actively involved in the Willamette Christian Church. Gerry co-chaired a committee with his close friend Roger Reif, that would rebuild the Canby High School Stadium and support athletic events and much more. Gerry was a “Giver” even after his death for his organ donations to others.
Gerry passed unexpectedly on February 3, 2020. He would want all to know that he had recently expressed how happy he was in his life and was confident knowing there was a home in heaven reserved for him.
Gerry is survived by his wife Marilyn, daughter Kerrie Tatone (David) and son Garrett (Kristyn), grandchildren Kristina and Trevor Tatone, Joshua, Morgan and Mackenzie Brown, Sister Barbara Cramer Thomas, two nephews Rick and Stan (aka Buster) Cramer, and neice Lonnie Curtis, along with the family of his deceased brother Bob Tondevold; wife Ila Tondevold, neice Cheryl (Harry), neice Roxy (Larry), and nephew Bob (Marcia).
He is also survived by his fishing buddies on the Siletz River, his Wednesday morning Bible study members (nearly 40 years in existence) and of course, his students and friends.
