Lois Carole Boyd, 96, passed away at NewAldaya Lifescapes of Cedar Falls on Sunday, February 9, 2020.

She was born October 6, 1923, in Green, Iowa, daughter of Isbrandt Ubbe (I.U.) and Henrietta (Deters) Harken. She was raised on the family farm with her ten brothers and sisters.

She attended and graduated from Clarksville High School where she met John Clifton Boyd to whom she was married on January 31, 1943, at the Unity Presbyterian Church of Clarksville.

The couple settled in Cedar Falls when he became Regional Manager for World Book Encyclopedias and she was able to be a homemaker and mother. After John was killed in a car accident in 1966, Lois became a single mother and sole provider for their family and worked for Western Home Communities in their Food Service Department.

Lois was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John; her son, David Boyd; 2 sisters, Margaret Norton and Ruth Nieman; and 6 brothers: Henry, Elmer, Lloyd, Gerald, Melvin and Irvin Harken.

She is survived by her son, James (Robin) Boyd of Port Byron, IL; her daughters, Joan Boyd of Clinton and Ann (Jerry) Fagle of Bettendorf; 4 grandchildren: Sophia Modless of Tucson, AZ; Jacob (Carissa) Boyd of East Moline, IL; Tess Fagle of Austin, TX; and Jena (Eric) Dhooge of Bloomington, IL; 4 great-grandchildren: Kensley Boyd, Corbin Boyd, Carson Boyd and Hallie Dhooge; a brother, Richard (Marilyn) Harken of Marion; a sister, Ardys Gentry of Denton, TX; and a sister-in-law, JoAnne Harken of San Mateo, CA.

Lois’ Funeral Service will be held at 1:30 pm on Monday, February 17, 2020, at First Presbyterian Church of Cedar Falls with an hour of visitation prior to the service from 12:30-1:30 pm. Burial will take place at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice and NewAldaya Lifescapes.

Lois enjoyed the many diverse friends and acquaintances her children brought home through the years. Coming from a large family, she was particularly fond of memories of family reunions with the Boyd and Harken families. Lois was an independent woman with strong Democratic viewpoints. Lois enjoyed reading historical fiction as well as travel which included trips to England and Spain.
