Eugene J. Albro, 76, of 286 Monroe St., former president of the New Britain Buick Co. and in the automobile business here for more than 40 years, and a former state official, died Thursday at his home after a long illness. Born in Poland, he was a resident of New Britain since 1918, coming from Willimantic where he resided 11 years. Albro was one of the pioneers in the automobile agency business in the city, a business now carried on by his son, Eugene J. Albro Jr. He was a police commissioner under Republican administration for four terms, state fuel administrator of the OPA during World War II, and a former member of the State Highway Commission. During World War II, he served as vice chairman of American Relief for Poland and held numerous other memberships including the New Britain Lodge of Elks, City Club of Hartford, Avon Country Club, and he was an incorporator of New Britain Memorial Hospital and the People's Savings Bank. He also was a trustee of the Msgr. Bojnowski Memorial committee and a former member of the New Britain Safety Council. He was a member of Sacred Heart Church of New Britain.

He leave his widow, Mrs. Stephanie Gosnievski Albro; his son; three daughters, Mrs. Lucy Luddie of New Britain, Mrs. Irene Marsters of Madison and Mrs. Theresa Ulbrich of Middletown; a brother, Edward Albro of Hartford; two sisters, Mrs. Catherine Angelopos of Hartford and Mrs. Julia Potaski of Wethersfield; 16 grandchildren and a great grandchild.

Funeral services will be Monday at 9:15 a.m. at the New Britain Memorial Funeral Home, 44 Farmington Ave., and at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
