Hezekiah Griffin met and married his first wife, Sarah Ann Pearcy in Marion County, Missouri in 1853 [1,3]. Five years after they married, Sarah Ann gave birth to their daughter, Amanda Melvina Griffin in 1858 [2,3]. Some sources indicate there were other children born to the young couple after their marriage, but that has not been confirmed. Within a year of giving birth to Amanda, Sarah Ann died in November of 1859 [1]. Shortly after Sarah’s death, the entire Griffin family departed Missouri for Texas.

In Texas at the age of 18, Amanda met and married Henry Edward Thurber in 1876 in Medina County, Texas [4]. Since there are no records to indicate otherwise, it is assumed that Amanda and Henry, remained in Medina County, following their marriage. The following year, Amanda had a daughter, Erie Jane Thurber born on 26 Dec 1877 [5]. Once again, due to the absence of records, this time for Amanda, following the birth of her child, it is assumed that Amanda died giving birth to Erie, much like her mother. However, it is assumed that Amanda died the day Erie was born - 26 Dec 1877.

In his bio for Hezekiah, Arnold Griffin stated that Amanda Melvina Griffin Thurber died in 1884 [2], which corresponds to the death year of her namesake aunt, Amanda Melvina Griffin Reed. I do not believe that year is correct.

It has always been easy to confuse these two women. The older Amanda was Hezekiah's younger sister, born in Indiana in 1848. And the younger Amanda was Hezekiah's daughter born in Missouri in 1858. Both Amanda's had the exact same maiden name and they were born only 10 years apart, so it's easy to confuse them. However, it seems to be too much of a coincidence to assume they died in the same year. Instead, I believe Arnold got them mixed up and mistakenly provided the 1884 death year for the younger Amanda, when it is actually the death year of the older Amanda. As stated above, is is assumed the younger Amanda died in 1877 giving birth to her child.
