Mary Jenkins Whitener, 82, passed away July 29, 2007, at Frye Regional Medical Center.

She was born Oct. 9, 1924, in Americus, Ga., to the late Brantley and Amy Harrill Jenkins.

Mrs. Whitener was a member of Penelope Baptist Church. She was a lifelong member of the Green Thumb Garden Club and Garden Club of North Carolina.

Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ned O. Whitener, and her brother Brantley Jenkins.

Survivors include five sons and two daughters-in-law, Earl and Susan Whitener, Tommy and Lisa Whitener, David Whitener, Brant Whitener and Bryan Whitener, all of Hickory; two sisters, Colleen Biggerstaff and Dorothy Butler, both of Forest City; a brother, Norman Jenkins of Rutherfordton; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Penelope Baptist Church, with the Revs. Larry McCracken and David Grinnell officiating.

Burial will follow in Catawba Memorial Park.

The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Bass-Smith Funeral Home. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Green Thumb Garden Club.
