Leslie Shelby Fox, age 86, died Tuesday, February 4, 2020, at his home in Charleston.

Born December 16, 1933, at Charleston, MO, to the late Leslie Wade Fox and Josephine Finley Fox, he attended Charleston Schools and as a young man was active in Boy Scouts where he obtained the rank of Eagle Scout. The Valedictorian of his graduating class, he was the recipient of the Marshall Award and went on to attend the University of Missouri at Columbia where he served as vice president of the student government, was a member of the Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity, had served as president of the Ag Club and was selected for several honor societies.

Following his college graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving with the 7th fleet in the Pacific as a navigator of the USS Regulus (AF57). After discharge, he returned to Charleston and began farming in 1957, but continued to serve his country in the capacity of Commanding officer of the Naval Reserve Surface Unit in Cape Girardeau for 6 years and retired after 28 years as a Commander for the United States Naval Reserve.

Active in his hometown community, he was a long-time member of the United Methodist Church, had served as a scout master and explorer scout leader for 5 years, served as the president of the Fox School District until its merger with Charleston R-1 School District, was a long-time board member of the St. James Drainage District and Big Lake Drainage District, was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Naval Reserve association and the Reserve Officers association.

On December 29, 1953, he married Alice Lee Burnett, who preceded him in death on July 14, 1992.

He then married Karen Leigh Batson, and she survives of the home.

Also surviving are his granddaughters, Alison Fox of Columbia and Maggie (Jamarcus) Williams of Charleston; great granddaughters, Aubri and Camille Williams of Charleston; daughter in law, Donna James Fox of Charleston and his sister, Mary Jo Fox Bush of Raymore, MO.

In addition to his first wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Shelby Fox; his daughter, Mary Alice Fox and his sister, Jeanette Fox Ashby.

Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., Thursday, February 6, 2020, at the McMikle Funeral Home in Charleston where funeral services will be conducted at 10:00 a.m., Friday, February 7, 2020. The Rev. J. Robert Webster, pastor of the United Methodist Church of Charleston, will officiate.

Interment will follow in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery under the direction of the McMikle Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be: Charles Moxley, Robert Jackson, David Brewer, Ed Marshall, Lee Welch and Michael Jones.

Honorary pallbearers will be: Bob Jackson, Reginald Young and Jim Moreton.
