Nina Maria was born June 8, 1935, at the original Cook Children's Medical Center in Fort Worth to Vera Sansom Connell Korth Neighbors Conner and the Hon. Frederick Herman Korth. Nina Maria grew up on the Marion Sansom Ranch, "Azleway," in North Tarrant County. Besides her family, she was raised and mentored by her beloved "Mammy," Emma Smith, who in her eyes, taught her everything she knew about cooking and life - and what a cook Nina Maria was.
Nina Maria graduated from Arlington Heights High School, attended Mount Vernon Seminary in Washington, DC, and the American Banking School. Nina Maria attended Southern Methodist University where she was a member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority. During her college years, she was a Fort Worth Assembly Debutante and a Duchess of the Washington DC Cherry Blossom Festival and the Tyler Rose Festival representing Fort Worth.
Nina Maria married Thomas Gary Cole Jr. at St. Andrews Church on June 14, 1955. Her devotion for her husband began when she was five years old when she attended his birthday party and gave him the book, The Thirsty Pony. Two years ago, she re-gifted it to him for his 80th birthday.
She was president of The Assembly, Pi Beta Phi Alumnae Club and Barnaby Club. Nina Maria wrote a society column for three years for the Fort Worth Press, "Nina Maria's Notebook." She sold residential real estate for a time and was a member of the Fort Worth Lecture Foundation for 40 years and supported St. Andrews Episcopal Church and the Gladney Center for Adoption.
Nina Maria recalled that the jobs that brought her the greatest pleasure were her Christianity, being a granddaughter, daughter, wife, mother, grandmother and friend and hosting prayer groups and family and friends in her home. Her life's passion was people, which she made her life ministry: multiple visits supporting friends, taking them her famous cucumber sandwiches and praying for and with them. She was at ease being both a "range wife" at her West Texas ranch on weekends or dancing the night away at balls. Her grandchildren have fond memories of after-school ice creams stops and literally "skipping" through life.
Survivors: Nina Maria is survived by her husband of 61 years, Thomas Gary Cole Jr.; her children, Carroll Marion Cole Kobs and husband, Jeff, and Thomas Gary Cole III and wife, Jacqueline; grandchildren, Allie Connell Kobs Turney and husband, Walker, Jeffrey Huffman Kobs Jr. and wife, Emmi, and Marion Sansom Cole; niece, Maria Korth Kroger; nephews, James Korth and Fritz-Alan Korth Jr.
The family wishes to extend thanks to the wonderful caregivers at James L. West Center and to our dear friends and helpers, Bobbi Hickman and Luisa Ramirez.
