A Soldier of the Revolution at the Battle of Yorktown in October 1781. He enlisted at the age of 16. He frequently saw Washington and LaFayette. He witnessed the British lay down their arms in surrender. He was one of the fourteen children of John Snead and Jane Winn Snead. After the Revolution, he settled to farming in Hanover. He married Sophia Ely Harris on March 1, 1792. The lived at "Edgewood". In his will, Robert left Edgewood, 400 acres of land, 15 slaves, a carriage, horses, mules, cattle, sheep, and hogs to Sophia. After her death it was divided among their 12 children.
