He witnessed the British lay down their arms in surrender. He was one of the fourteen children of John Snead and Jane Winn Snead. After the Revolution, he settled to farming in Hanover. He married Sophia Ely Harris on March 1, 1792. The lived at "Edgewood". In his will, Robert left Edgewood, 400 acres of land, 15 slaves, a carriage, horses, mules, cattle, sheep, and hogs to Sophia. After her death it was divided among their 12 children.
