Johnny “Pop” Louis Howton, 77, of Hoover, AL passed away January 30, 2020. He is preceded in death by his father, Jesse Lewis Howton, mother, Flora Lee (Bearden) Howton, and sister Mary Jo (Howton) Thies. He was born in Birmingham, AL, October 10, 1942 and remained in the area the remainder of his life. After graduating from Shades Valley High School, he worked in the concrete industry with his last employment being 25 years as a plant manager with Southern Ready Mix concrete. He also was the ‘pour master’ and co-owner of Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard ceramics. Johnny drove a school bus for Hoover City Schools and retired after 20 years. He also drove a school bus for Mountain Brook City Schools. Never one to stop working, he spent over 25 years driving charter buses for Adventure, Crow, Alabama Limousine and last employment residing with Cline Tours. Outside of driving the charter bus, he loved going to estate sales and gifting his children with the ‘treasures’ he found. He also loved collecting and tinkering with Gravely tractors along with other equipment. He was excellent at ‘directing’ what needed to be done and always taking care of his family.

He is survived by his daughters Amy Stewart (Jeff) and Audra Vaughn (Heath), son Mark Howton (Cindy), grandsons Grayson and Cole Stewart, ex-wife Carolyn Howton, brother-in-law Henry Thies and his beloved cat, Sissy. He also leaves behind numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and many special friends. A special thank you to the caring staff at South Haven Health and Rehabilitation (Hoover) and Comfort Care Hospice (Pelham). In lieu of flowers, consider a donation to one of these facilities.

Visitation will be held Monday, February 3, 2020, 6:00 – 8:00pm at Southern Heritage Funeral Home. A service of remembrance will be Tuesday, February 4, 2020, 10:00am at Southern Heritage Funeral Home with burial to follow at Patton Chapel Cemetery, Hoover, AL.
