Obituary

Robert Franz Briix was born in Mittweida, Saxony, Germany, February 25th, 1845, and was reared and educated in his own town. He served as a private in the German army and later as an officer in the French war.

At the age of 14, he was confirmed in the First Evangelical Lutheran church and remained steadfastly by that faith. He was united in Holy matrimony in 1870 to Agnes Hermine Floss and from this union there were born seven children. The two oldest daughters passed away in infancy. Also his wife and one son preceded him to the home Beyond. Those surviving him are Hattie C. Herpich of Herington, Robert G. Briix , jr., of Vici, Oklahoma, George F. Briix of Delavan, Elsie M. Ninneman jr., of this city, fourteen grandchildren and one [great] grandson.

In 1881 he moved from his boyhood home at Mittweida to Dresden where he engaged in merchandising for a time. He came with his family to this country in 1883, locating near Delavan where he resided until 1902 when he came to the vicinity of Herington, finally moving on West Walnut street where he lived until death.

Mr. Briix had been gradually failing for the last six months and for the past two months his children were with him constantly and ministering to his needs, until Wednesday April 7th when he passed away at the ripe old age of 81 years, one month and 13 days.

The funeral was held from St. Paul's Lutheran church Sunday afternoon with a large crowd of old neighbors and friends present. Burial was in Sunset Hill cemetery.

In speaking of the deceased, Rev. Koester said in part: "With the death of Father Briix, whom we are about to take to his last resting place, passes a familiar and well liked figure from the community. Though not tall, his robust physique and his fine erect posture was the admiration of all who saw him. It was no doubt due to his splendid physical training he received in early youth to his temperate mode of living.

His judgment was as sound as his health, made so by the many and varied experiences in his long life, in which rejoicing and sorrow, success and disappointment changed in a never ending variety. His early life was spent quietly as the sunny days in scenic Saxony where he was born, days that in no way foreshadowed any clouds on the horizon of his future.

"Yet a change came as expected when in his best years he was called to the colors and served in the army. Soon after he saw his first active story in the campaign of '66 against Austria, returning home with victorious colors. Again in '70 and '71 he helped subdue a nation. He has seen nations rise and fall. He saw the land of his birth rise from an obscure nation to one of great power and then collapse. His country of adoption he saw change from one of hardship and privation to one of wealth and luxury. Small wonder, then, that the manifold vicissitudes in his life made him a man of sound judgment and well versed in European history, who read with keen understanding the later political history of the past two decades."
