History: May McALISTER SOMMERS was a ranchette and taught School for a number of years, when she retired she received $50 a month as her teachers pension. She was first superintendent of Sublette County Schools. May graduated from the University of Wyoming with a Bachelors Degree in 1957 at the age of 78, this had been her life dream to finally get a College Education. However, she had previous received a teaching certificate from a Normal School in Kansas. She Came to Wyoming in 1905 as a 'school mom' after teaching in Doniphan Co, Kansas. After she was widowed she raised her four children by herself and still managed the ranch. May was a charter member of the Sublette County Artist Guide where all the ranch women got together to read the stories they had written and visit over tea before going home to do their evening chores. Grandmother Sommers was a womens libber before her time even when her husband was alive she was called May McALISTER Sommers. May McAlister wrote her McAlister Family Journal 1903 White Cloud, KS. Check out the internet site below. She is probably the person who influenced my life the most, and we always had a special bond. Think I got my travel bug from her, but I'm a better driver than her --- she drove like the bat out of h-----. Coarse when you grow up in the horse and buggies then go to the automobile age what can you expect. [#1 & #13]. *4 Children: Martha, Florence, Albert P. 'Bud' Sommers, & John F.
