In 1942, shortly after the United States entered World War II, Miriam married her schoolmate, John Thomas Dunn. During the war, Dunn served as a Marine Corps flyer. They had one daughter, Marilynn, and divorced in 1946. In 1960, she married Clarence Bishop, a well-known Santa Barbara High School coach and teacher and they enjoyed a 35-year marriage prior to his death in 1995.
From 1946 to 1960, Miriam enjoyed a rewarding professional career while living in the Pomona Valley and raising her daughter as a single parent. She was Executive Secretary of Fernstrom Pacific Corporation, newsprint importing firm selling to newspapers on the Pacific Coast and Executive Secretary of Convair/Pomona Division of General Dynamics Corporation. She was an active community leader, serving as president of Claremont Junior Women's Club, president of the Soroptimist Club of Pomona; and a charter member and president of Pomona Valley Chapter, Executive Secretaries. Miriam took great pride in her work and many service club involvements.
Following her marriage to Clarence Bishop, Miriam and Marilynn moved to Santa Barbara where she embraced the active life of her husband. They golfed, joined three dance clubs, played bridge and entertained often. Their honeymoon was spent camping and fishing in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Camping soon graduated to an Air Stream trailer and eventually a comfortable house at Lake Almanor where they spent their summers. Miriam loved to travel and they enjoyed golfing safaris and cruises with their many friends. While living in Santa Barbara, Miriam worked as secretary to a well-known financial writer and securities analyst and, after his death, continued working with his wife until 2001. She loved arranging flowers and was an active member of the Las Floralias Flower Arranging Club and on the Women's Governing Board of the First Presbyterian Church of Santa Barbara, and the Santa Barbara Woman's Club. Miriam loved the theater and had season tickets to various venues there.
Miriam moved to Carmel Valley Manor in 2001 to be closer to her daughter, Marilynn. At the Manor she continued flower arranging, played bridge frequently, and for several years chaired the Day-Trippers group. She treasured the many close friends made during this time and those who cared for her in her final years.
Miriam will be remembered for her kindness, her style and grace, her positive attitude and inner strength, and her love of life. In addition to her daughter, Marilynn, she leaves two grandchildren, Kari Ogden (Geoff) and Kevin Gustafson (Leona Zamora) and four great grandchildren, Kacey and Carson Ogden, and Nina Miriam and Annika Gustafson.
