Alice (Smith) Mankin was born on November 4, 1903 in Dunlap, Sequatchie County, Tennessee, and she was the daughter of John L Bolen Smith (1859–1916) and his wife Martha Josephine "Josie" (Merriman) Smith (1861–1940). {Her obituary has her as the "daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Smith."}

She was married in 1920 as the 2nd wife of Newton Gowin Mankin (1895–1964), who was born in Carlockville, Rutherford County, the son of Mary Elizabeth "Bettie" (Curlee) (Mankin) Keele (1873-1961) and her 1st husband William Jackson Mankin. Newton was married 1st about late 1917 to Edith "Chassie" Smith (1899–1926), and he was married 3rd to Freddie Lucille (Sexton) Sain (1912–1999).

Alice and her husband Newton moved to Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee about 1927. Living at 926 North 5th Street in Nashville, Alice was 52 years old and married when she died of an asthmatic attack on February 21, 1956 and was DOA when taken to Nashville General Hospital.

Survivors included her husband Newton Gowin Mankin, daughters Mrs Hazel Cruze in Knoxville, Tennessee and Mrs Vina Louise Linebaugh and Mrs Mary Jane Locke of Nashville, sons Paul Gowin Mankin, Jack Mankin and James Newton Mankin, all at Nashville, sisters Mrs Pearl Kilgore in Dunlap, Tennessee, Mrs Mary Hatfield of Wooten, Kentucky and Mrs Hazel Burns at Knoxville, brother Jim Smith in Dunlap and seven grandchildren.

Funeral Services were held on February 24th at Phillips-Robinson Funeral Home, and Burial was in Woodlawn Memorial Park, Nashville.
