Richard Winkler is the son of John Winkler and Hannah Bibleheimer.

Richard Winkler married Alice Fielding, Jan. 16, 1933.

Richard and Alice are the parents of Richard, John, William and Donald Winkler.

I only met Grandpa Winkler once but he was a very sweet man.

As a young man during the hard years following the depression, Dick worked odd jobs, including a clerk in a shoe store. He met and married Alice Fielding in 1933 and settled in Easton, PA. He then worked a couple of days on the WPA and to supplement his income he started betting on horses which led to a part time job working for a bookie. In 1939 a local bookie decided he needed to expand his operation from Easton, PA. to Phillipsburg, NJ. (just across the Delaware River from eachother). An arrangement was made to set up a mom and pop shop in Phillipsburg, that was named Dick's Store. He moved his family to an apartment above his store and eventually ended up buying the building which consisted of 3 stores; Dick's Store (a small grocery type store), a coffe shop and a shoe makers store and 6 apartments. Dick worked hard 6 1/2 days a week, 52 weeks a year. By the time his last child was born in 1948, his wife Alice announced there was to be no more slot machines or horse betting in the store. He turned to playing the stock market and was moderately successful at this endeavor. When he found spare time he loved sports and was an avid N.Y. Giants fan. He had amassed a wonderful baseball card collection. I have obtained this information from Dick's son Richard, who has done the Winkler genealogy and has graciously shared his work with me. I hope I have done justice to Dick Winkler's memorial page and am proud and honored to have been given this story to share with my son.
