Waterloo Region Generations website gives Joseph C. Bowman as Mary's husband; however, it is questionable whether they were ever married (although he was the father of her son, Reuben Bowman):
- "Bowman" is not engraved on her gravestone.
- The 1861 Canada Census shows Mariann "Shoemaker" (age 37) and Reuben Bowman (age 9) living with her parents, Jacob D. and Jane Shoemaker.
- The 1871 census also shows Mary "Shoemaker" (age 47) living with her parents, but Reuben is not listed.
- A marriage register for Reuben Bowman and Louisa Geiger (000197) gives his parents as Joseph Bowman and Mary Ann Shoemaker.
- A death record (012620) noted that Mary was a "spinster."
