Jack's mother was Esther Kathryn Hardman (1 May 1912 • Quincy, Adams Co IL - 6 May 1980 • La Grange, Bond Co IL). After the death of Jack's father in 1958, she was remarried to Frank Bernhardt Steiner. Jack is buried next to his mother in Rose Hills Cemetery. He could be considered the leading genealogical researcher on the Levan family, and he did excellent work expanding on a 1927 book written by Warren P. Coon.
