Mr. Rayford Barger, 94, passed away on Tuesday, January 14, 2020, at Sodalis Waco Memory Care in Waco. Burial will be at Union Cemetery in Freestone County.

Rayford was born on August 12, 1925, in the vanished community of Cedar Creek near Freestone, to the late Henry Edgar and Nettie Christian Barger. He attended the Freestone School and graduated from Teague High School with the class of 1942.

Rayford served in the U. S. Army during World War II from August 30, 1944, to April 26, 1946. He was a member of the 407th Infantry, Company B, and participated in combat in the European Theatre where he was wounded in battle. He received the EAME Ribbon with two Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart.

Rayford married Marie Lamberth on December 23, 1944, and they shared over 75 years. After his war service, he returned to Teague and went to work for McSpadden Grocery for seven years. In 1955, he began his career with First National Bank in Teague. He was well known in the area as a banker and retired as Vice-President of the Citizens National Bank in 1990.

During his career, he was active in numerous civic organizations including the Teague Chamber of Commerce and the Teague Rotary Club. He also raised cattle on his ranch in Donie for many years. After his retirement, he and Marie were inseparable and enjoyed numerous camping trips with friends, trips to Branson, and other locations.

Rayford was a longtime and faithful member of the Teague Church of Christ and served as Elder for many years.

He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Sandra Lynn Barger; and brothers: Bill Barger and his wife, Cleo, Billy Joe Barger, and Jerry Barger.

Survivors include his wife, Marie Barger; daughters, Karen Steele and her husband, Frank, and Annette Irvin and her husband, Neal, all of Teague; son, Randy Barger and his wife, Gloria, of Teague; grandchildren: Audry Steele and Charles di Piazza, Emily Steele, Wyatt Steele and his wife, Emily, Carla Gallegos and her husband, David, David Soehnge and his wife, Misty, Adam Soehnge and his wife, Robyn, Katie Walker and her husband, Cole, Philip Irvin and his wife, Megan, and Andrew Irvin and his wife, Brittany; 13 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; sisters: Velmarine Garrett, Wynema Hamilton and husband Bruce, and Glenda Tucker; brother, Lesslie Barger and wife Patsy; sister-in-law, Louise Barger; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and many friends.
