Obituary for Mae Townsend
Mae Barnes Townsend, born August 28, 1930, was the last of 6 children born to A.C. Barnes and Lena Cooper Barnes in Rockwall County, Texas. Mae passed away June 25, 2018 in Dallas, Texas following a brief illness.
Mae attended Rockwall public schools, graduating from Rockwall High School in 1948. She married Jack Townsend of Forney, Texas on January 20, 1950. Together, they raised 3 daughters, (Kathy, Karen, and Kim), affectionately known as the “3 K’s,” in Forney and Katy, Texas. They had additional stops in Brookshire, San Augustine, and Lufkin, before moving to Dallas several years ago to enjoy a well-earned retirement. Mae was a godly woman, wonderful mother (and mother-in-law), homemaker, volunteer, and hostess for many friends and family members. She was an active and willing participant in the raising of 5 grandchildren, who spent too many hours to count on the hills of their San Augustine home in East Texas. The Saturday fish fry’s at Sam Rayburn during the spring, with Mae and sister-in-law Dean Townsend preparing fish and hush puppies were legendary. Mae also was an excellent provider, working various jobs at Forney State Bank, Katy ISD, and the family LP gas and water businesses. Years later, she was an active volunteer with the Texas Baptist Men Retiree Builders, as she and Jack travelled thousands of miles through the lower 48 and Canada on construction jobs for TBM. Mae was currently a member of Cliff Temple Baptist Church in Dallas.
Mae is pre-deceased by her parents and three sisters. She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Jack M. Townsend of Dallas, three daughters, Kathy Hamilton (Randy) of Burnet, Karen Hatley (Warren) of Dallas, and Kim Johnson of Lufkin. She is survived by five grandchildren, Brian Hamilton (Lesley) of Tomball, Kristi Arrowood (Matt) of Houston, Reed Hatley (Jessica) of Midlothian, Don Johnson III (Kelly) of Houston, and Cole Johnson of Dallas. Mae has 6 great-grandchildren; Hudson, Colton, and Jack Hamilton, Kaylee Jo and Katelyn Arrowood, and Harper Hatley. She is survived by a sister, Helen Stafford, of Arlington, and a brother, A.C. Barnes, Jr, of Odessa. She has numerous nieces and nephews scattered about, all of who loved and admired their Aunt Mae.
A visitation for family and friends will be held Friday, June 29, from 5 PM to 7 PM at New Hope Funeral Home in Sunnyvale, Texas. Funeral services will be Saturday, June 30, at 10 AM in the New Hope Funeral Home Chapel, followed by burial in Hillcrest Cemetery in Forney. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to the Texas Baptist Men – Retiree Builders, 5351 Catron Drive, Dallas, Texas 75227.
“Memaw,” as Mae was known to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, was the finest example of a Christian woman, wife, sister, mother, and grandmother. She will be sorely missed, but we know “as her soul was surely settled, so are ours.”
