Ellenor French Lorman, 94, passed away on Feb. 15, 2019 ,at Wesley Pines Methodist retirement community in Lumberton, N.C., where she had been a resident since 2011.
Ellenor was born on Nov. 13, 1924, in Lumberton, the daughter of Daniel Duval French and Lillian Pearl Floyd French and granddaughter of Colonel William Foster French and Ellen Fuller French.
She is survived by her three children, Douglas George Lorman, Jr. of Plano, Texas, Annette Lorman (Hugh) Sullins of Alpharetta, Ga., and Georgene "Gigi" Lorman (William) Harris of Charlotte, N.C.; five grandchildren, Ellenor French Sullins, Hubert Walker Sullins III, Lillian French Harris, William Noel Harris, Jr. and John Douglas Harris; her devoted nephew, William Foster French III; and two favorite nieces, Mary Ellenor French Crofton and Sheila Clary French.
Ellenor was predeceased by her brother, William Foster French II; her husband of 62 years, Douglas George Lorman; and her granddaughter, Margaret Walsh Harris.
A lifelong resident of Lumberton, Ellenor was educated in Lumberton city schools before leaving Lumberton High School after the 11th grade to attend Greensboro College, from which she graduated as a member of the Class of 1945. A highlight of her college career was having as chief marshal of her class the opportunity to meet First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt and lead her on a tour of the college's campus.
Returning to Lumberton after her college graduation, she met the love of her life, the Chicago-born Doug Lorman, who was a player on the local Lumberton professional baseball team. Ellenor and Doug were true members of the "Greatest Generation" as they raised their three children in Lumberton, where Ellenor was active throughout her adult life at Chestnut Street United Methodist Church in many capacities such as a Sunday School teacher, Vacation Bible School director, friendship trays volunteer, church office helper, and minister search committee member. She also loved being a substitute teacher at Lumberton High School for over 25 years, not only due to her love for learning but also so that she could keep tabs on her teenage children and all of their friends!
Ellenor was also devoted to her book club, The Browsers, was a member of the Colonial Dames of America, and was a charter member of Pinecrest Country Club.
Visitation will be held on Monday, Feb. 18, 2019, from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Ruby McMillian Chapel at Wesley Pines. Interment will be private.
