WABASHA -- A graveside service for Alice J. E. Betterly will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in Riverview Cemetery in Wabasha, with the Rev. Lyle Krumrie officiating.
Mrs. Betterly, 97, of Iowa City, Iowa, formerly of Reads Landing, died July 17, 2007, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City, following a brief illness.
Alice Ostrom was born Dec. 13, 1909, in Farmington, Minn. She grew up in Reads Landing, graduated from Wabasha High School in 1927, then earned a degree from the University of Wisconsin-Stout in 1932. On June 29, 1934, she married Melvin Betterly in Minneapolis. She was a homemaker and also taught school while living in Duluth, Minn. A resident of Iowa City since 1952, she was a member of First United Methodist Church, its church circle, and the University Club. She also volunteered with the Mercy Hospital Guild.
Survivors include her son, Richard (Peggy) of Boynton Beach, Fla. She was preceded in death by her husband on June 20, 2004, a son, 10 brothers and three sisters.
Memorials are preferred to a charity of the donor's choice.
Abbott Funeral Home of Wabasha is in charge of local arrangements.
