From Fellows family stories & letters on the Clarke County, Georgia GenWeb site:
..."Geo P Fellows went & drove the team & took the family, or his mother & children to the State of Georgia." (I presume this would be Samuel & Nancy Cone & their children.)
The following is taken from correspondence between CD Smith and Emma (Stark) Hampton, probably sometime between 1915, and 1925 when she died at age 82, the writing looks like that of an elderly person, and explains how George happened to settle in Georgia: "After George's father died, (Cyrus Fellows) his mother (Nancy) married Samuel Cone and they removed to Georgia probably because Samuel's father, who had been a "Yankee Peddler" had settled there and became a very successful merchant in Rome, Georgia."
On the 1830 DeKalb County, Georgia census are listed Gardner, Gilbert, Reuben & Samuel Cone. The Samuel Cone is an older man & living with an older woman. Are the other three men our Samuel's brothers? James White Reeve also lived in the same county in 1830. It was his daughter, Gabriella that married John H. Cone that is mentioned in James' will. John Thomas Cone, son of John H. Cone states in his Civil War pension record that he was born in DeKalb County, Georgia in abt. 1837. But where are our Samuel & Nancy Fellows Cone? In 1840 John H. Cone, is in Floyd County, Georgia. This is where the town of Rome is situated. By abt. 1843, John H.'s son Pinkney was born in Miss., all the older children in Georgia.
The JOA Clark Autobiography in Chapter 7, page 19, tells the story of a group of 13 war-weary families of Attala County, Miss. that form a wagon train bound for Texas in September 1865, leaving from Kosciusko. The campers got together the first night & elected John H. Cone captain to lead the host to Texas. Most of the wagon train stopped in Grimes County, Texas. John's brother, Charles S. Cone & family had already migrated to Texas from Attala County, Miss. about 1857, first living in Montgomery County & then moving to Grimes County.
John H. lived the rest of his life in Grimes County, Texas. He & Gabriella had at least 11 children. Some of these children remained in Mississippi & others came west with their parents, especially the younger ones. -Judy Beach
