Graveside services for former Sturgis resident Gladys J. Hemler, 79, were held Friday, July 6, 2007, at Mount Moriah Cemetery, Sundance, Wyo., with the Rev. Bill Haley officiating. Visitation was at Worden Chapel in Newcastle, Wyo.

Mrs. Hemler died Sunday, July 1, 2007, at Weston County Health Services in Newcastle, Wyo.

She was born Jan. 8, 1928, in Three Rivers, Mich., the daughter of John and Dorthea A. Andresen. She was the only daughter in a family of six boys. At the age of 5, she and her family moved from Michigan to a farm near Huron, where she was raised and received her education. In 1946, she was married to James Smith. To this union, two boys and two girls were born. They lived in various places in South Dakota. After her first husband died, she entered the restaurant business, owning several and working in many in South Dakota.

In 1990, she married Ellis Hemler, a retired postal worker in Newcastle, Wyo., where she resided until her death.

Gladys was a very caring person, always ready to help anyone and everyone. She loved to cook and always made many treats for the holidays, birthdays and for all occasions. She was proficient in sewing and arts and crafts. She was loved by all who knew her and will be missed by all who ever knew her, most of all, her family and her husband.

May God let her rest in peace from her tireless work, and the pain she has endured here on Earth.

She is survived by her husband, Ellis, Newcastle, Wyo.; two sons, Tim Smith, Newcastle, Wyo., and James Smith, Jr., Williston, N.D.; two daughters, Barbara Waack, Sioux Falls, and Ann Johnson, Geddes; four brothers, Richard Andresen, Clear Lake, Albert Andresen, Revillo, Robert Andresen, Stockton, Calif., and Harold Andresen, Newcastle, Wyo; 10 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
