John served as a private in the 208th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, Company G (Civil War).

The son of John H. & Rebecca Cox, he married Jemima J. Stephens and fathered Mary Elizabeth (b. 12/04/60 - married John Nelson and Charles Barker), George B. M. (b. 05/??/62), Llewellyn F. (b. @1867), Effie May (b. @1874), and Jerushy S. (b. @1876). In 1860, he was a laborer living in Oliver Township, Perry County, Pennsylvania, and stood 5' 10" tall with black hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Perry County October 16, 1862, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg October 28 as a private with Co. D, 151st Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company July 27, 1863. He also enlisted and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg September 9, 1864, as a private with Co. G, 208th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company June 1, 1865.

Cause of death is listed as "carcinoma of stomach" with "gastric hemorrhage" a contributing factor.
