Obituary for Doris Bernadine Broers

Doris “Bernadine” Broers, age 97 of Wellsville, KS passed away Sunday, December 8, 2019 at the Wellsville Retirement Community.

Doris “Bernadine” Broers was born October 7, 1922, the daughter of Reuben Wise and Fredonia (Quellhorst) Myers at her family’s farmstead in Miami County, Kansas.

She grew up in Miami County, attending Wade’s Branch School in elementary and later graduated from Paola High School in 1940. After graduation, she attended the Ursuline Academy to obtain her teaching certificate. Bernadine taught in one-room school houses for several years before marrying her husband Bert Broers on April 9, 1944. They were married almost 59 years before his passing in 2003.

Bernadine worked for Bob Klier’s grocery store and was the secretary for Gene Mitchell for many years. She worked at the Senior Center in Wellsville as well, and spent most of her younger years as a mother and homemaker. Bernadine enjoyed gardening her many flowers, sewing, painting, jigsaw and word puzzles and travelling.

Bernadine is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Gene and Judy Broers of Wellsville; daughter and son-in-law, Geryl and Terry Gretencord of Wellsville; daughter, Sharon Broers of Wellsville and son and daughter-in-law, Kendall and Valerie Broers of Ottawa; sister-in-law, Martha Broers of Ottawa; 14 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, siblings: Aileen Hartpence, Royce Myers, Lauren Myers, Wendell Myers, Gale Myers; son-in-law, Paul Mahaffie (1975); daughter-in-law, Lola Mae (Sink) Broers (2006); one grandson, Gilbert Cruz and one granddaughter, Lynneda (Gretencord) Martin.

Memorial graveside services will be held 11AM Saturday, December 14, 2019 at the Wellsville Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Wellsville United Methodist Church or the Wellsville City Library in care of Wilson’s Funeral Home, PO Box 486, Wellsville, KS 66092.
