John Smith Bean was one of 11 children of John L. and Mary Evans Bean. On Christmas Day, 1858, John married Almira Woodward Evans . They had one son, John Forrest Bean, who was born in Derry in 1861 and is possibly buried in the Bean lot, although there is no headstone and no cemetery records of his burial.

A veteran of the Civil War, John Smith Bean was living in Methuen, MA when he enlisted in Co B, 14th MA Heavy Artillery Regiment. He died in New York City from disease while in the Union Army .

His name is on the Derry Civil War Monument.
