Church services for Vanita Bertha New Scoggins, 79, will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday, July 17, 2007, at the First Assembly of God Church in Morton, with Rev. Robert Burns and Rev. Robert Slayden officiating. Burial will follow in the Morton Memorial Cemetery.

Mrs. Scoggins died at Levelland Covenant Hospital July 15, 2007. She was born Jan. 24, 1928, in Snyder, Okla., to the late Fred New and Della (Roson) New. During Vanita's teen years her father passed away and her mother, married Leon McWhorter.

On May 17, 1946, she married Lonzo Zeldon Scoggins in Memphis, Texas. They moved to Morton from Memphis in 1947. They were parents of two daughters, Ginger Scoggins and Jan Odle. Mrs. Scoggins was a Stanley dealer for over 25 years. She was very active in the LeFleur Garden Club in Morton. She also served as the W M Circle Leader for the West Texas Assembly of God District. She pioneered the concept for holding a yearly auction to benefit missionaries. She became a member of the Morton First Assembly of God Church in 1947. In 1955, Lonzo and Vanita moved to Maple and began attending Maple First Assembly of God Church until the church closed. They returned to Morton First Assembly until they moved to Levelland in 2005. In the past year they became members of the First Assembly of God Church in Levelland. She will be remembered as one who loved to help the under-privileged.

Survivors include her husband, Lonzo Zeldon and daughter, Ginger, both of Levelland; one granddaughter, Kim Caine and husband Christopher; one great-grandson, Zeldon; two brothers, Lloyd New of Oklahoma and Freddie New of Morton; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her step-father; a daughter, Jan Odle; a brother, Robert New; and two sisters, Wanda Dunn and Mary Lee Doss.
