Her father was William Boatman, born 7 November 1834 in Parke County, Indiana, United States. He married her mother in 1855 in Jasper County, Missouri. They lived in Taney County, Missouri, then, about 1860, moved to Newton County, Arkansas. William was pro-Union and enlisted in the 3rd Arkansas Cavalry (Union Army) in 1862. He caught a fever and died in mid-October 1862 near Springfield, Missouri, while in the Union Army. His burial site is not known.
