Beatrice Matthews, age 79, who moved to Colorado Springs from California in 1965, passed away on Thursday, June 18, 2009.
She was a retired businesswoman. Beatrice Marie Terrebonne was born on March 30, 1930 in Golden Meadow, Louisiana to Edison and Marie (Broussard) Terrebonne.
Her first language was Cajun French and her first love was dancing with her little sister to the fiddles and accordions of Cajun music.
She was raised Catholic on Bayou LaFourche in a shotgun house on a shell lane. After graduating from Golden Meadow High School in 1947 she moved to California and met Navy Aviation Metalsmith Charles Louis Matthews at a USO dance.
They married August 6, 1949 in Berkeley, California. Through the 1970's and 1980's, Bea was well-known as a fun-inspiring owner of three local taverns: The Pour House at Wooten and Galley Rd., the Elbow Room at Peterson and Highway 24, and the Ellicott Inn, 18 miles east of Colorado Springs.
Her Cajun joie de vivre and natural warmth were a magnet that drew in legions of regulars who became mutual friends. She had a knack for creating tight communities among family, friends, and colleagues.
One of her last meals was her legendary shrimp gumbo, served to a large family gathering at her daughter's house in eastern Colorado Springs.
She had people laughing through their tears the day before the angels came for her. She is survived by her daughter, Roxanne Kelly, and her three sons: Michael (wife, Carlene) Matthews of Colorado Springs; Neal (wife, Kate Callen) Matthews of San Diego, California; and Troy (wife, Patty) Matthews of Kincardine, Ontario, Canada, and Moore, Oklahoma; one brother, Lindbergh (wife, Linda) Terrebonne of Lafayette, Louisiana; and one sister, Rozena Pitre of Galliano, Louisiana. Beatrice is also survived by her grandchildren: Kristin Gordley, Kevin Matthews, Emily Matthews, Rachel Matthews, Robert Gibson, and Joshua Gibson.
She also has five great-grandchildren. Bea was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Katie Cotter, her husband, her parents, and her siblings: Chester, Mack, Nolte, Gertie, and Enola. Memorial Services Pending. Memorials may be made in her memory to the Pikes Peak Hospice Foundation, 825 East Pikes Peak Avenue #600, Colorado Springs, Colorado 80903.
