The son of Thomas & Hannah (Hagan or Hagens) Alexander, in 1860 he was living with his farming family in Martic Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He apparently never married.

A Civil War veteran, he and his brother George enlisted and mustered into federal service at Lancaster February 22, 1865, as privates with Co. I, 195th Pennsylvania Infantry, but they deserted August 24, 1865, at Washington DC.

Cause of his death is listed as "valvular disease of the heart" with "rheumatism" a contributing factor.
