Born March 31, 1921, in Rimersburg, he was a son of Arthur and Grace (McCall) Stewart.
He received a bachelor's degree in education from Clarion University and two master's degrees, one from San Diego State College and the other from San Diego State University.
He entered the U.S. Navy in 1939 and retired in 1960 as a lieutenant commander. He served during World War II and the Korean War and received many military honors, including the Silver Star for bravery and heroism.
During World War II, he served aboard the USS Helena, which was damaged during the attack on Pearl Harbor. In July, 1943, while on board the USS Helena, the ship sank in Kula Golf. He also was mentioned in three books about the USS Helena. Prior to his military retirement, he commanded the USS Romach, a destroyer escort.
After his retirement from the military, he taught 18 years in the Montgomery School System, Chula Vista, Calif.
After retiring from teaching, he spent seven months in Jubal, Saudi Arabia, where he taught navigation to the Saudi Royal Navy.
On his return from Saudi Arabia, he and his wife spent four years as managers of the Lawrence Welk Retirement Community, north of Escondido. At the time of his death, they managed the East Valley Retirement Community, Escondido.
Surviving are his wife, Maurine (Reitz) Stewart; a daughter, Kitty Wall; and two grandsons. All are of San Diego, Calif.
He also is survived by a sister, Mrs. Pauline Hawk of Butler; two brothers, A. D. Stewart of Lakeland, Fla., and Connell Stewart of Shippenville; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ruth (Sapp) Stewart and two brothers.
Mr. Stewart chose cremation and requested that his ashes be scattered at sea. A memorial service will be held at a later date at Rimersburg Presbyterian Church.
