THREE OSAKIS FOLKS KILLED
Osakis Car Collides With Freight Train at St. Paul With Fatal Results
Three Osakis people were killed and two injured when a Minneapolis & St. Louis freight train crashed into an automobile at Como Avenue and the Northern Pacific railroad crossing, St. Paul, Tuesday night. The victims were driving toward the St. Paul Loop when the accident occurred. D. B. McClerry, driver of the car, and Mrs. Cloe Black were killed instantly. Mrs. Alvin Kirk died of a fractured skull a few minutes after she was admitted to the Ancker Hospital.
Mrs. and Mrs. Walter T. Clark of Osakis were also in the car. Mrs. Clark suffered a fractured leg and abrasions of the face and Mr. Clark, severe lacerations and abrasions.
The car was thrown ten feet and hurled against a railroad signal post. McClerry's body was found in the car while that of Mrs. Black had been dragged 50 yards down the tracks.
Although there is a yellow stop sign and a centerpost with a red flashing light at the crossing, Clark said he did not see either and did not believe McClerry saw them.
Harvey Howard, engineer on the freight train, said his train was moving at about 40 miles an hour when it struck the car.
"I saw the automobile coming at high speed, but thought the driver would see the signals and my train and slow up, " Howard said. "When I realized he was not going to stop, it was too late for me to do so."
