Mrs. Lydia M. Greene, known to all as Grandma Greene died at her home here, April 6. She was over 91 years of age. She was born at Pepin, Wisconsin, Dec. 11, 1848, and was the first white child born in that locality. She was of Scotch - Irish ancestry. Her father, Dr. John Alex. Hicks was born near Londonderry, Ireland and died at Prospect in 1897, aged 96 yars. Her mother Phoebe N. Gordon was descended from colonial forefathers in New Hampshire and Massachusetts.
She was survived by one brother, Josiah A. Hicks, of Springton, Ida. one daughter, Clarice, wife of Nelson Nye, six grand children, Waldo, Emery and Ivan Nye, Hope (Mrs. Dee Hedgpeth), Marian (Mrs. Chas. Bean) and Irene (Mrs. Stanley Jantzer.' by great-grandchildren, Beryl Cunningham of Ashland, Leatha and Delpha Clarke, Robin Hedgpeth, Darlene and Patricia Nye, Jerry Nye, Darwin Bean, Betty Jean and Lloyd Nye, all of Prospect. Grandma Greene came to Oregon in 1888 and saw our cities grow from backwoods villages and our highways develope from rocky muddy byways. She was deeply interested in all good movements. In spite of her great age and months of sickness she retained her memory to the last and was deeply appreciative of the many loving gifts and kind inquiries she recieved.
The Rev James Dole conducted the services at the graveside. Mrs. Dunnegan sang "Loved Ones in Glory Looking This Way" and Mrs. Phipps sang Beautiful River" and "Evergreen Mountains of Life. The funeral was largely attended and the floral offerings were many and beautiful.
