He grew up on a farm near McLemoresville, TN.

He loved gardening, fishing which he learned from his daddy. He was loved playing with words he learned from his mama who is said to have been pretty stern taskmaster.

Virgil joined the Navy in Jan 1941 at the age of 17. He was to get out at the age of 21 but then WW II came and changed his plans. Because of the GI Bill he was able to enroll at Murray State College and earned his Bachelor's degree. He moved with his wife south and enrolled in that University of Georgia.

He became news editor at the University as news editor with the Cooperative Extension Service. Later earned his Master's in journalism.

Virgil left the University and became personnel manager of Jefferson Mills. He also became editor of The Jackson County Herald until they could find new owners. This lasted for 2 years. Then he became part owner of The Herald for his efforts.

In 1962 He and a friend purchased The Hartwell Sun. in six months he sold his half to his partner and returned to work at UGA until 1982 in which he retired. He returned to writing a weekly column for the Jackson Herald and free-laced for various other publications.

Virgil and his wife, Mary, lived in Jefferson and raised a daughter and three sons. In 1996 Mary died. He then Married again.

He is survived by his second wife, three sons and a daughter, 7 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.
