Charles H. Nimitz, Jr. is the uncle of Admiral Chester W. Nimitz. On 6 June 1906, Charles H. Nimitz, Sr. deeded the Nimitz Hotel to his son, Charles, Jr. The elder Nimitz continued to reside at the hotel until his death on 28 April 1911.
Among some of the notable and famous who were guests at the Nimitz Hotel were President Rutherford B. Hayes, Generl Robert E. Lee, Philip H. Sheridan, Horace Greeley, William Sydney Porter, explorer Adolphus W. Greely, Ulysses S. Grant, William Rufus Shafter, Fitzhugh Lee, Earl Van Dorn and James T. Longstreet. There has never been any documintation on General Robert E. Lee staying at the hotel, but it is rumored that Nimitz, Jr. bought the furniture used by the General after he (Lee) left Texas.
On 29 July 1926, Charles Jr. and his wife, sold the Nimitz Hotel to a group of Fredricksburg Texas men who remodeled the aging Hotel at a cost of $125,000.
The Hotel closed its doors forever in the fall of 1963. The Nimitz Hotel was renovated and on 24 February 1967, on what would have been Admiral Nimitz's 82nd. birthday, it was opened as a museum and tribute to the men and woman who served under Admiral Nimitz in World War 2.
Today, the hotel is the headquarters of the Admiral Nimitz State Historical Park and administered by the Texas Wildlife Department.
