Eliza Jane Smith was the daughter of George Washington SMITH (IL) and MENERVA GIBBS. She was born 20 Feb 1854 in Illinois. She married Edwin E DAVIS 21 March 1875 in Franklin Co., Il. Edwin was born Illinois. According to Edith Davis Keller, Edwin Davis deserted Eliza Jane and her children. She was living in Bluff Dale, Texas in a tent with her children. She took in washing to support her family. Joseph Like would come ride by and see her and the children under such dire circumstances. He would bring over a sack of flour, etc for the family. Soon they were married when LEE DAVIS was about 5 years old which would have made it ca 1898 and the 1910 census shows that they were married 12 years, which would have made it 1898. By 1910 census they were living in Erath Co.
Her father, George Washington SMITH, born 22 April, Montgomery Co., VA an died 14 Jan 1894 in Franklin Co, IL. Her mother, Minerva Jane GIBBS was born 10 April TN and died 4 Jan 1902 Franklin Co., IL. Both are buried at Oak Hill Cemetery - Northern Township, Franklin Co., IL.
